Architectural and park complex
The architectural complex “Palace” is located on the northern shore of the Black Sea, only about 2 km from the center of the picturesque Balchik. It is a complex with various buildings, inscribed in the incredible landscape of the beach. The villa ensemble was designed by the famous Italian architects Amerigo and Augustino at the request of the Romanian Queen Maria of Edinburgh. Construction began in 1924 and lasted until 1934. The complex includes two main parts – a building and a park with a botanical garden. Old Bulgarian, Gothic, Oriental and Moorish ornaments are intertwined in the architecture of the Palace.
Today, the Palace complex is a monument of culture and garden art of national importance. It is included in the list of the Hundred National Tourist Sites. The atmosphere offers opportunities for artistic performances and holding national and international festivals, competitions for young talents, exhibitions, filming, videos and more. Cultural events, combined with the romantic atmosphere, bring aesthetic pleasure to visitors and leave them with a lasting memory of meeting the beautiful. The Palace State Cultural Institute also has a promotional and publishing function – it also carries out additional activities such as congress tourism, organizing and conducting weddings and other special events.
University
The University Botanical Garden in Balchik was established in 1955 by Prof. Daki Yordanov, who at that time was rector of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski ”. It is located on the territory of the Architectural and Park Complex “Palace”. The garden was built and arranged immediately after the construction of the Palace, on the initiative of Queen Mary of Edinburgh – a lover of beauty.
The botanical garden is located on a steep hill with six terraces descending to the sea, and each terrace is paradise itself. Today, on a total area of 194 decares in Balchik, plant species from all over the world can be found. Approximately 2,000 species of plants belonging to different families and genera are grown here, with an incredible variety of colors and shapes. The collection of large cacti and succulents, protected in a large greenhouse, is also impressive. The beautiful alleys of the Botanical Garden lead visitors to the Palace of Queen Mary.

Balchik is a beautiful small town located on the Black Sea coast in the northeastern part of Bulgaria. It is one of the oldest cities in Europe. It was founded in the middle of the 6th century BC by Greek colonists who set foot on the ruins of a much earlier settlement.
